Wood Pigeon

The UK’s largest and commonest pigeon, it is largely grey with a white neck patch and white wing patches, clearly visible in flight. Although shy in the countryside it can be tame and approachable in towns and cities. Its cooing call is a familiar sound in woodlands as is the loud clatter of its wings when it flies away.

We have 4 wood pigeons that visit the garden every day. I find them very shy and they fly off at every little sound. Sometimes even when we just get near to the window inside the house they notice the movement and fly away.

They love to sit in the sycamore tree and when the tree is full of leaves in the summer and they are not visable you can still hear them flapping their wings as they go from branch to branch.
